NeoGraft® recovery happens in two very different phases: the scalp heals first, while new hair takes several months to appear. At Dr. Rudy Coscia’s practice, our team performs NeoGraft hair transplantation for patients in Granite Bay and Sacramento, California. Rudy Coscia, MD, is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and prioritizes patient education and safety when discussing treatment.
The First Few Days Are About Protecting the Grafts
NeoGraft uses follicular unit extraction, or FUE, to remove individual follicles from a donor area, usually at the back of the scalp. The follicles are then placed where additional coverage is needed. Because they are collected individually, FUE does not require the longer incision used in strip harvesting.
The first few days are not the time to judge your future hair density. Your main job is to protect the donor and recipient areas and follow the postoperative directions from our team. Minor discomfort is possible, but each person’s experience can differ.
Before treatment, ask for clear guidance about:
- Hair washing: When and how should you cleanse your scalp?
- Sleeping: How can you avoid putting pressure on the recipient area?
- Hats: When may you safely cover your scalp?
- Daily activities: When can you return to work, exercise, and your regular grooming routine?
Weeks Two and Three: Shedding Can Be Normal
Shedding may become noticeable around two to three weeks after the procedure. Seeing transplanted hairs fall out can be unsettling, but it does not mean the treatment has failed. This stage comes before the new growth cycle begins.
Our Surgical Journey Videos include a NeoGraft overview for patients who prefer to see the treatment explained visually. Reviewing the procedure beforehand may also help you prepare more specific questions for your appointment.
Months Three and Four: Early Hair May Appear
New hair may start to emerge within three to four months. At this point, the change may still be subtle. Early strands need time to lengthen, and coverage can continue improving over the next several months.
Candidacy also shapes what you can expect. You need enough donor hair, and your pattern of thinning affects how the transplant is planned. Our article about what NeoGraft can and cannot correct also explains why treatment can restore selected areas without preventing future loss elsewhere.
