What is Laser Vein Therapy?

Laser vein therapy is a painless non-invasive procedure that’s most effective for spider veins and smaller varicose veins. Laser therapy uses heat energy to penetrate the dermis and damage the vein. Over time, scar tissue grows around the damaged vein, which forces the vein to collapse and eventually become absorbed by the body.

Laser vein therapy sessions are scheduled every few months, depending on the size and severity of the vein. There’s no downtime associated with the treatment, with final results visible after one to two years of treatment.

What Is Sclerotherapy?

An alternative to laser vein therapy is sclerotherapy, which is a more invasive procedure that delivers faster results. Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a salt solution directly into the spider or varicose vein. The solution is designed to irritate the walls of the vein; once this happens, the vein collapses and becomes absorbed by the body.

Results

*Sclerotherapy can deliver faster results than laser vein therapy, with final results visible within two months for spider veins and three to four months for varicose veins. Sclerotherapy shows a high rate of effectiveness, 50% to 80% of treated veins are no longer visible after just one session.

Vein Treatment FAQs

What causes spider and varicose veins?

Spider and varicose veins often develop when tiny one-way valves in the veins weaken or fail, allowing blood to pool instead of flowing efficiently back to the heart. Over time, this leads to enlarged, visible veins beneath the skin. Factors such as genetics, prolonged standing, pregnancy, hormonal changes, and aging can contribute to their development.

Are spider veins dangerous?

Spider veins are typically not medically dangerous, but they can be bothersome from a cosmetic standpoint. In rare cases, they may cause mild discomfort such as itching or burning. If leg veins cause pain, swelling, or other symptoms, it’s important to consult a vein specialist.

How do hormones, pregnancy, and aging affect veins?

Hormonal shifts, particularly during pregnancy or menopause, can weaken vein walls and valves. Increased blood volume and pressure during pregnancy often contribute to vein issues. Natural aging also leads to loss of skin tone and vein elasticity, making veins more visible.

When should I see a specialist about vein problems?

You should consult a specialist if veins cause pain, aching, swelling, or if you notice rapid changes in appearance. Anytime vein issues interfere with your daily activities or confidence is a good time to schedule an appointment. A vein consultation helps determine the best treatment plan for both cosmetic and medical concerns.

Do I need a referral to see a vein specialist?

In most cases, you do not need a referral to schedule a consultation with Dr. Coscia for vein treatment. You can contact our Sacramento, Granite Bay, or Coeur d’Alene office directly to book an appointment.

Is vein removal cosmetic or medical?

Vein treatment is usually considered cosmetic when targeting small spider veins. However, varicose veins that cause symptoms like discomfort or swelling may be classified as a medical condition. Insurance coverage varies based on diagnosis, so a consultation will help clarify your options.

Can vein treatments remove veins on the face, hands, or chest?

While the primary focus is often leg veins, many patients also experience visible veins in other areas. In certain cases, laser vein therapy may be used to treat small veins on the face, hands, or chest. Your aesthetic goals will be discussed during your consultation.

How long does vein treatment take?

Treatment sessions are typically brief. Laser vein therapy sessions often last 30 minutes or less, while sclerotherapy appointments may take 30 to 45 minutes. Multiple sessions may be recommended, depending on the size and number of veins treated.

Can spider veins come back after treatment?

Treated veins typically collapse and are absorbed by the body. However, new spider veins may form over time, especially if risk factors such as genetics, hormonal changes, or lifestyle persist. Ongoing skincare and occasional maintenance treatments help you’re your results looking their best.

Will I need to wear compression stockings after treatment?

After sclerotherapy or laser vein treatment, compression stockings are often recommended for a short period to support healing, reduce swelling, and improve outcomes. Your aftercare instructions will be customized to your treatment plan.
