The Full Facelift: What It Includes

To understand the techniques used, you first need to know a bit about how the incisions work. A full facelift procedure covers the areas from the temples down to the neck. Dr. Coscia hides your incision just behind your hairline.

The incision goes down to the top of the ears and then continues behind the ears, ending within the hair at the back of your ears. This long-but-hidden incision allows Dr. Coscia to address areas including:

• Crow’s feet
• Loose midface skin
• Nasolabial folds (around the mouth)
• Jowls around the jaw
• Neck skin sagging

Dr. Coscia usually creates an additional small incision beneath the chin to treat the neck area accurately.

How Newer Facelift Techniques Are Unique

Decades ago, facelifts focused mainly on tightening the skin, but didn’t pay a lot of attention to the delicate and complex layers of tissue beneath it. That often led to a plastic or “overdone” look.

Dr. Coscia uses modern facelift techniques that target the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS). The SMAS contains fibrous tissue and muscle, and it’s vitally important in supporting the skin of the face and neck.

You can think of the SMAS as a foundation for your face. Just like you can’t build a stable home without a good foundation, a facelift won’t have great results unless you strengthen and improve the foundation of your face.

Dr. Coscia elevates your SMAS layer and secures it with tiny sutures. This creates the stable facial foundation you need. Then, he repositions your skin. This includes trimming excess skin, tightening, and securing it in a more elevated position on your face.

What to Expect from My Facelift Results

Your facelift results are usually visible almost right away, although bruising and swelling may prevent you from seeing final results for about four to six weeks.

How Long Will My Facelift Results Last?

Good news: Your facelift results can last for up to ten years. 

The reason why facelifts last so long is that the procedure works to repair sagging facial muscles and put them back in their originally youthful position. Once muscles have been repositioned, they stay there for several years, until the aging process and gravity starts to tug the muscles back down again.

While every patient ages differently, it usually takes about five to ten years for facial muscles to start sagging again, meaning you can enjoy results for a full decade before needing any maintenance.
